Identity

My work as a ceramic artist is a reflection of the struggle to mitigate identity in a Eurocentric society. My research is an exploration of identity as an Indian Sikh second generation immigrant and an investigation into understanding my culture, religion, and family history. Research is driven by my work through the medium of clay due to its unique ability to mimic figure, stone, crochet, lace, and many other textures in the round. The endless possibilities make clay the ideal medium to bring these worlds together. Clay allows the study of patterns in architecture as well as textiles that deteriorate over time. These experiments serve as a revival of heritage through historical motifs that are transformed by duplicating or modifying patterns onto clay surfaces with ornamentation like embroidery, prints, and more. The integration of these fields can help preserve historic heritages through clay. Tradition and cultural influence are reflected in the designs, textures, and techniques of my work and serve as a bridge of connection to and understanding of self.
